If you don't know how your spirit relates to your soul and body, you are a dysfunctional Christian. Now, that's a strong statement, and for most Christians, this understanding isn't even on the radar. They've never even heard they have a spirit, soul, and body, much less how they relate to each other. But in 1 Thessalonians 5:23, the Apostle Paul wrote,
And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.
I could teach a lot from this verse, but I just want to point out that you are a three-part being: spirit, soul, and body. I am absolutely convinced that if God had not shown me how these three parts work together, I would have lost the tremendous impact He has had on my life.
Jesus put a greater emphasis on the spirit than the flesh, which is the part of you that comprises your soul and body. The spirit is the part of you that has been completely changed, and understanding this is the key to a fruitful relationship with God. The flesh is what you feel, but the spirit is the real life-giving part of you. If you want to see what your body looks like, you can take a glance in the mirror, but you can't stare into a mirror to see your spirit. To see what your spirit is like, you have to look in the Word of God and believe what it says.
Learning how to live out of your spirit means you're not controlled by how you feel. Your body and soul may feel one way, but your spirit is in perfect unity with God. That means you can choose how you want to be. Thank You, Jesus!
