You've Already Got It!

Any blessing that you could ever need from the Lord is not something you have to strive for; it’s something you already have. God made the provision before you ever had the need. It is just a matter of receiving what He has already done.

The book of Ephesians is written from the perspective of everything already being ours in Christ. In verse 3 of the very first chapter, it says,
Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ
Notice it says God “hath”-past tense-blessed you with all spiritual blessings. How could you ever doubt that God would give you something if He’s already done it?

Back in 1973, when Jamie and I pastored our first little church in Seagoville, Texas, I didn’t even have a complete Bible. The one I had taken with me to Vietnam was all mildewed, and entire books were missing. I decided that believing for a new Bible wasn’t an option - it was a necessity.

I decided that I had to start seeing results somewhere, so it might as well be with a new Bible. If I couldn’t trust God for $20 to get it, how could I trust Him to minister to people about eternal things?

The devil knew how important this was to me, and he fought me “tooth and nail.” It took me months to get enough extra money to buy that Bible. During that time, not ten minutes would pass that I didn’t have to deal with some thought of unbelief. The devil was telling me, “You’ll never get it. Some man of God you are. You don’t even have a whole Bible. How can you pray for people to be saved or healed when you can’t even pray and get a new Bible?” The battle was intense.

The day finally came when I had the money. I bought a brand-new Bible, had my name engraved on it, and walked out of the store with it under my arm. Instantly, my doubts ceased. I had won! And did you know that I never again had another thought of doubt or unbelief about getting that Bible? You’re probably thinking, Well, of course you didn’t doubt once you had it. That would be crazy! That’s my point.

God has given us everything we need. We shouldn’t be struggling with thoughts of doubt and unbelief; we need to learn to receive what He has provided. We have to do that from a position of rest. That may sound easy, but it actually takes effort to rest.
Let us labour therefore to enter into that rest, lest any man fall after the same example of unbelief.
Hebrews 4:11
You have all the faith that you need (Rom. 12:3), but in order to appropriate God’s provision by faith, you need to learn to rest. Now, I can tell you, it takes a lot of effort to rest! Why? Because your mind is going 24/7, and unless you are actively renewing your mind (Rom. 12:2), it’ll go to worry, fear, care, and all of these kinds of things. That’s why the Scripture talks about resisting the devil (James 4:7), which means to actively fight against him. One of the ways to renew your mind is by actively fighting against the devil’s thoughts with the Word of God! If you don’t put up a fight, the devil will eat your lunch and pop the bag (see 1 Pet. 5:8). He’ll steal your peace. That’s why you’ll never hear me speak doubt and unbelief. I like my peace right where it is. The devil will not rent space in my mind. You can live the same way!

Learning to walk by faith is a huge part of the Christian life (Rom. 1:17 and 2 Cor. 5:7). It’s how you relate to God and how you receive from Him. There are right and wrong ways to do this. Take healing for instance. There is a difference between fighting to get healed and fighting because you already are healed. It’s the difference between failure and success. First Peter 2:24 says,
By whose stripes ye were healed.
(Emphasis added)
It’s already a done deal. It is actually incorrect to pray for healing. Instead, we should be applying our faith to receive the healing that the Lord has already provided.

In Ephesians 2:8, Paul wrote,
For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves.
We aren’t saved by grace alone or by faith alone; we are saved by a combination of the two. Actually, faith isn’t true biblical faith unless it is used to receive what God has already provided by grace.

Grace is what God has already done for us, independent of any worth or value on our part. If it’s tied to some goodness of ours, then it’s not true grace. God, by grace, has already provided everything we will ever need.

Our faith doesn’t move God. If God hasn’t already moved by His grace, then our faith can’t make Him. Faith simply appropriates what God has already provided by grace. If He’s already provided for our needs by His grace, then faith is just our positive response to what God has already done - not something we do to get God to respond to us.

It takes a revelation from the Holy Spirit to make these truths become alive on the inside of you.
