Why We Weren’t Meant to Do It Alone

I don’t believe that the Lord created us to function on our own. Now, when Adam and Eve chose to disobey God and ate of the forbidden fruit, they started functioning independent of God. And even though that’s the way most people live, I believe that God actually created us to be dependent upon Him.

How God Wants to Guide Us Every Day

In Jeremiah 10, the prophet described Israel’s coming captivity, which resulted from their decision to turn away from God. He wondered how a nation that was once so blessed by God and meant to live abundantly could end up in such a mess. Then he answered his own question:

O Lord, I know that the way of man is not in himself: it is not in man that walketh to direct his steps.

Jeremiah 10:23

Jeremiah was saying that we’re not wise enough to run our own lives. It might sound blunt, but it’s reassuring to know that we don’t have to do it alone. God wants us to seek His help and direction. Even though God gives us the freedom to choose, many people try to handle things on their own and only turn to God when things go wrong. This isn’t how God intended us to live.

Take King Solomon as an example. When God offered him anything he wanted, Solomon asked for wisdom because he knew he didn’t have all the answers (1 Kgs. 3:5–10). Despite being the most powerful man in the kingdom, Solomon admitted he needed God’s help. This humble request for wisdom really pleased God.

What I’m trying to impress on you is that God wants to guide us too. Isaiah 30:21 says we’ll hear a voice saying, “This is the way, walk ye in it.” And Psalm 32:8–9 promises us that God will guide us, but we shouldn’t be stubborn or resistant to His direction. The important thing is to listen for God’s guidance and follow it. God has a plan for each of us, and He wants to lead us through life’s challenges. By trusting in His guidance, we can navigate life with His wisdom and purpose.

The Foundation of Hearing God’s Voice

When I reflect on my life, I can honestly say that everything God has done in me and through me has been because He spoke to me. This isn’t just reserved for me or a select few; it’s the normal Christian life. Every believer is called to hear God’s voice.

I was born again at the age of eight. That transformation happened because God convicted me. He spoke to me, and it changed my life. Even though I didn’t fully discern God’s voice then, it was a genuine encounter. But it wasn’t until I was eighteen that I began to hear God speak to me more clearly. I had a miraculous encounter with the Lord that marked the beginning of a path where hearing God’s voice became absolutely central to my life.

Since then, God’s guidance has led me to make decisions that, in the natural, seemed totally irrational. There were abundant reasons not to follow His direction. Yet by obeying, I found my life set on a course that was nothing short of divine intervention.

The Advantage of Hearing God

I remember sitting in a board meeting recently, discussing how our ministry has progressed. It’s completely clear to me that what I’ve achieved isn’t due to my own wisdom—God’s voice and guidance have made the difference. His wisdom is infinite, and He sees beyond our limitations and prepares us for what’s ahead. Imagine how beneficial it would be to know what’s coming! That’s the advantage of hearing God’s voice.

In John 10:27, Jesus said, “My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me.” Hearing God is not meant to be extraordinary; it is meant to be the normal Christian experience. John 16:13 adds, “Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come.” The Holy Spirit is here to guide us, show us what’s ahead, and provide divine direction.

The Blind Path of Ignoring God

Consider a blind person navigating a room. They might bump into walls, trip over furniture, and stumble around. This is a vivid picture of what it’s like when we don’t hear God’s voice. Some Christians are like that blind person—they are saved and they love God, but they struggle to hear His voice. They go through life bumping into obstacles, reacting to crises, and making decisions based on trial and error rather than divine insight.

But I tell you, the Christian life isn’t meant to be a series of random mistakes and corrections. We’re not meant to wander aimlessly, only seeking God’s help when we hit a wall. God wants to speak to us daily, guiding us clearly and gently. As a matter of fact, it’s not a coincidence that you’re reading this; God is reaching out to you right now. God wants to direct you continually, every moment of every day. The key is learning to listen.

His Still, Small Voice

Many people believe that hearing God’s voice involves dramatic manifestations. They expect an audible voice, a blinding light, or some tangible sign. However, the primary way God speaks is through a still, small voice. This quiet communication requires faith and attentiveness.

In 1 Kings 19:11–12, Elijah experienced a powerful wind, an earthquake, and a fire—all dramatic events. Yet God wasn’t in any of these. Instead, He spoke through a “still small voice.” This understated way of communication is often how God interacts with us, requiring us to be still and listen with faith.

Practical Steps to Hear God’s Voice

1. Tune Your Ears: Just like a horse pricks up its ears to listen, we need to focus our attention on God’s voice. Proverbs 4:20 advises, “My son, attend to my words; incline thine ear unto my sayings.” We need to be attentive and intentional about hearing God’s voice.
2. Seek Daily Guidance: God has wisdom for every situation we face. Whether dealing with financial issues, marriage problems, or health concerns, He has a plan. You don’t have to navigate life blindly; you can ask for and receive His guidance.
3. Avoid Relying Solely on Your Understanding: Proverbs 3:5–6 reminds us, “Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.” We must lean on God’s wisdom rather than our own limited perspective.

You Can Know and Follow God’s Will

If you’re struggling to hear God’s voice, you’re not alone. Many Christians find this challenging, but it’s not because God is silent. He is always speaking, and it’s often about learning how to listen. We don’t have to live in uncertainty, hoping that our actions please God. We can receive clear direction and walk confidently in His will.

I have experienced firsthand how God’s guidance has shaped my life. From avoiding danger to making crucial decisions, His voice has always guided me. This isn’t just for me; it’s for every believer. No matter where you are or what you’re facing, God wants to communicate with you personally.

Hearing God’s voice is an integral part of living a fulfilled Christian life. It does require some patience, practice, and faith on our part, but the rewards are immeasurable.

God is speaking to you today. The question is, are you listening? Remember: He is always there, guiding, instructing, and loving you. I pray you’ll make time each day to sit quietly with Him and listen to His still small voice. If you do, I believe it’ll transform your life in ways you never imagined.
